ABSTRACT:

A true experimental – study was conducted  using  pre test and post test with experimental and control group design by Nesakkarangal orphanage selected as experimental group and Anbalayam orphanage selected as control group by using lot, among 60 orphan children 30 samples were selected from each group by lottery method. Used standardized tools like problem behavior checklist, Human figure drawing projective technique  before and after implementation of specific intervention for assessing the emotional status of the orphan children, Pretest was conducted for both the experimental and control group then specific interventions like Spiritual support, social support, play therapy, music therapy, counselling, personal and environmental hygiene was given only for experimental group for 14 days.  After 2 weeks, Post test was conducted for both the experimental and control group.  The collected data were analysed by using descriptive and inferential statistics (independent ‘t’ test) and Chi-square analysis was also used and it was found to be effective when compared with pre test and post test scores.

INTRODUCTION:

“If a child lives with hostility, He learns to fight, If a child live with shame, He learns to feel guilty”   Datta

Children of today are the citizens of tomorrow; the prosperity of the nation depends upon the health of its future citizens. As the population of orphan citizen is growing in epidemic proportions, there is an enormous, immediate need to give the necessary care for those orphans so that they have a fruitful life and bright future. According to United National International Children Emergency Fund, Statistics in the year 2005, 0-17 year orphaned children are 25,700,000 (www.unicef.com)7. Despite the positive aspect of living in an orphanage, the children described many negative aspects such as so much of rules and regulation that resulted in the children feeling more restricted.

Most of these children miss love, protection and warmth; they lack supervision and are devoid of education.  Losing these legitimate rights they undergo physical and mental stress.  They are missing the opportunity to grow to the best of their potential.  Instead, they may suffer serious and often permanent physical and personality disorder making them vulnerable adults.  So they need adequate emotional support to cope up with their life (www.calib.com) 8.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

“A study to determine the effectiveness of specific interventions on emotional status among orphan children in selected orphanages”, Salem.

OBJECTIVES:

1.       To assess the level of emotional status among the orphan children of selected orphanages.

2.       To determine the effectiveness of specific interventions on emotional status of orphan children.

3.       To associate the emotional status of orphan children with demographic variables (Age, sex, education, duration of stay, child transferred by whom).

HYPOTHESES:

H1: The mean post test score of emotional status of experimental group orphan children will be more than the Pre test score.

H2: There will be a significant association between the emotional status of orphan children and demographic variables like age, sex, education, duration of stay and child transferred by whom.

METHODOLOGY:

Research approach:  Quantitative evaluative research approach.

Research Design: True experimental design two group pretest and post test design.

Setting, Population and Sample and Sampling Technique

Investigator selected the sample of 6–12 year children by lottery method.
In Experimental group 30 children, 30 children are selected for control group. The technique that was adopted for this study was simple random sampling without replacement by using lottery method. The conceptual frame work Modified Betty Newmann’s System Model.

Data Collection Procedure

The purpose study was explained to orphanage caregivers and children. Investigator got permission from the participants .Pretest was conducted by problem behavior check list filled by care givers, and by Human Figure Drawing projective technique this was done by orphan children. Specific interventions (such as Social support, Spiritual support, Play therapy, Music therapy, Personal and environmental hygiene) given for 2 weeks. There was no conduct between investigator and control group after the pre test until the administration of the post test. The post test was administered with same questionnaire after 2 weeks for both the groups, after 2 weeks specific interventions given for control group also.

Data Analysis

The data collected from the respondents were coded and entered in data sheet. The data entered were thoroughly checked for the correctness of the entries. The data analysis was done by using descriptive and inferential statistics.

Findings

Comparison of emotional status of orphan children with experimental and control group.

The figure depicts that in control group both pre test and post test 2(6.67%) of them had mild emotional disturbance and 28 (93.33%) of them had moderate emotional disturbance.  In experimental group 2(6.67%) children had normal emotional status, 4(13.33%) children had mild emotional disturbance and most of the children 24(80%) had moderate emotional disturbance, in post test 26(86.67%) children had normal emotional status and 4(13.33%) children had mild emotional disturbance.

CONCLUSION:

The result of the study shows that there is an improvement in emotional status of orphan children after the specific interventions, and it suggest that specific interventions are essential on emotional status of the orphan children, The specific interventions done for this study will help the Nurses to support the orphan children psychologically, so that orphan children also will get good future.
